Over the past 33 days, the governemnt has been shut down over border security disputes between the Democrats and Republicans. Democrats have agreed to give $5.7 billion dollars for border security, a much larger sum than before, only if Republicans agree to open the government again. Trump, however, has not changed his mind and still stands with the government closed. Democrats are trying very hard to get the government reopened and are stringing together sums of money to get Trump to open the government.
The author of this article is Sheryl Gay Stolberg. The article was written on January 23, 2019 in Washington. Prior to reading the article I still knew about the government shutdown and how the Democrats wanted to get the government back open and were trying multiple ways to negotiate with Trump. This can be related to the 1995 Government shutdown that had the government closed for 21 whole days. Our current shutdown has been the longest in US history, leaving hundreds of thousands of people with no pay.
