A government shutdown began on December 22, 2018, and has been going for nearly 23 days, making it the longest government shutdown in the history of America. The shutdown began when Trump asked for billions of dollars in funding to build a border wall but was refused by Democrats. Since then, about 800,000 government employees have gone unpaid and unheard by Trump, who is "proud to shut down the government for [the wall]." As neither Republicans or Democrats are doing much, there is no end in sight for this particular embarrassment.
This article was written by Stephen Collinson on January 12, 2019, about 22 days after the shutdown began. It is definitely targeted towards those who do not support Trump, but it does still report the facts. This shutdown connects with the government shutdown that took place on January 19, 2018, although that one only lasted for about three days. The fact that this shutdown has been continuing for so long reflects the troubles the current administration is going through. However, politicians cannot keep sitting around, twiddling their thumbs. Waiting for someone else to fix the problem for them is unacceptable right now, especially since so many people are on unpaid leave or even working without pay.
