Jude Holland - California Teacher Punches Student on Camera

This week at Maywood Academy high school in southwest Los Angeles, California, music teacher Marston Riley punched a 14 year old student in the face, leading to a fistfight. The student ended up grabbing Riley by the leg and falling on the floor after the two exchanged punches. Finally a school security officer stepped in to break up the fight. The entire ordeal was captured on a cell phone camera by another student. After interviewing the students, it was concluded that the student had been asked to sit down, because he wasn't wearing the proper uniform. Instead he approached Riley, shouting profanity and racial slurs at him, when he punched him. Riley has now been arrested and police patrols will be on campus for the next week.

Although what the student did was not ok, the reaction from the teacher was extremely inappropriate and over the top. I think when we choose teachers and staff to educate in schools, we need to make sure they know how to properly react in hostile situations like this. The disrespect the student gave to the teacher was only made worse by the teachers violent reaction, as students look up to their teachers. Although we say it all the time, education really is "the future", and if we want to improve the lives of future generations, bad teachers like this only get in the way of progress to an improved and more affective education system. Education can't occur when students resent their teachers.

  1. Yeah, LA's public school system is pretty terrible. What an idiotic teacher that is to react with such immaturity to some offensive words. I'm not condoning the student's actions, rather, condemning them, but that teacher needs to learn how to deal with people saying things that bother him. Often in life, people will say offensive and rude things, and this "teacher" needs to grow up and be welcomed to this world. Inexcusable actions.
