On Saturday, April 23, officers from the U.S. Marshals Service’s Fugitive Task Force were sent to look for Orlando J. Collins. Collins was on Kansas’ most-wanted list for “two counts of interference with commerce by means of robbery.” They arrived at Collins’ motel room in Topeka, and according to a statement made by the FBI, the officers “came under gun fire from inside the hotel room.” Two deputy U.S. marshals as well as an FBI agent were shot, and another officer suffered a leg injury. But the chaos didn’t end there. As the gun shots continued, “a fire was ignited from within the room, which eventually spread to the entire building,” the FBI said. Everyone was evacuated from the motel which burned for more than three hours. After the fire, an unidentified body was found in the motel room Collins was said to be in. Shootings like this are very dangerous and often end in many casualties. I’m glad the other motel guests were safely evacuated.
