Summary: Presidential candidates Ted Cruz and John Kasich have recently announced that they are going to team up to try and steal votes from Donald Trump so that they don't end up with a majority of delegates with anybody so that the Republican party gets to pick who they want as the candidate. They are planning on doing this with three state primaries: New Mexico, Indiana, and Oregon. Cruz is going to focus on Indiana while Kasich focuses on the other two so that they can succeed in those states. CNN predicts that this team up won't do too much for the election because that only adds up to 109 delegates if they sweep those states. They say that this won't have too much of an effect on Trump winning the nomination. Cruz and Kasich in the news are now trying to play this alliance down in the press saying that it's really not a big deal.
Analysis: I think that an alliance like this would be a smart idea if they hadn't said it to the media. A plan to pull majority away from somebody to let the party decide would definitely be smart since Kasich and Cruz both have no chance because even if Cruz got every single delegate he would barely be above the majority count and that would literally be impossible. Now that the public knows, those states will be much more guarded against those candidates because they will think that they are just being used for delegates (which they are). And now that they are trying to play it down in the media it looks almost corrupt that they are trying to cover it up. This reminded me of the Corrupt Bargain which was where a candidate promised a competitor that he could be his Secretary of State if he told all of his supporters to support him and then he became the President.

I do think this would have been an incredibly smart idea. Too bad that people have to be sneaky and corrupt, or else this might have actually had a shot.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you
ReplyDeleteI think they put it out in the open so people wouldn't feel cheated. I guess that was their intention.(Alejandra Hernandez 6th period)
