Push for A new national Park near Mobile, Alabama By: Luis Ceja
Recently a group of naturalist have been lobbying heavily to create a new national park. One in the delta at the edge of of Alabama right before the Gulf of Mexico. Apparently the delta where five different rivers converge is home to the one of the most diverse ecosystems in all of north america. Part of the area surrounding the delta is already protected by a wildlife trust. Which doesn't make much of a difference since development won't happen in the protected area. The area that's protected is a swamp and can't be used for development. It's not just the swamp that needs protecting though the surrounding area which is open to development is key too the survival of many species. So a group of naturalist want to designate the entire area as a national park and put it under the protection of the National wildlife refugee. This plan has faced lots of opposition within this heavily conservative state. Many people want no part of the federal government involved as the have a deep distrust. Others benefit from the money made through these developments. So there is still much to be done to protect the natural environment. Hopefully they can work to create a solution that is lasting but isn't faced with too much opposition.
