The first plane to fly across the Pacific without a single drop of fuel. It landed in California after two and a half day flight. The plane flown by Bertrand Piccard, touched down at midnight in the Mountain View. Piccard said, "It's a new era. It's not science fiction. It's today. It exists and clean technologies can do the impossible." The plane's wingspan was of a Boeing 747 and only weighed as much as a SUV. The other pilot, Andre Borschberg, told CNN, "I'm very happy that everything works extremely well and the airplane is functioning as it should." He also said that it shows that technology can be reliable. The plane flew from Hawaii to California and took about 62 hours to complete. The plane looks like a giant dragonfly and has to have almost perfect weather to fly.
This plane is making history just like Amelia Earhart made history. She was the first woman and the second person to fly solo across the Atlantic. She got her US flying license in December 1921 and in October 1922 she set an altitude record of 14,000 feet for women. Earhart was also the 16th woman to receive her international pilot's license in 1923. Everday technology is advancing and something new is happening. There will always be a first for something.
