Tamir Rice's Family Recieves $6 Million from Cleveland by Shelby Linker, 8th period

In 2014, Tamir Rice, 12, was shot by a police officer while playing with a pellet gun in a park. They conducted a criminal investigation regarding the two police officers in question but in the end, a grand jury decided to not press charges. The conclusion to the court case sparked nationwide outrage at the injustice for the young boy. Subodh Chandra, the family's attorney, released a statement saying, "In a situation such as this, there is no such thing as closure or justice. Nothing will bring Tamir back. His unnecessary and premature death leaves a gaping hole for those who knew and loved him that can never be filled."

It was horrible to hear about this incident the first time but here we are, still having to fight for as much justice as we can give this young man. This reminds me of the peaceful marches by African Americans as they marched and protested for equality. Although they were peaceful, they were met with police brutality. Hopefully the family will use some of the money to honor Tamir.

  1. Money alone won't fix the problems caused by this shooting. A lot has to really change to fix the problems in cleveland's police department and police departments around the country.
