Senate Appoints First Female Officer for Warfighting Command--Becca Brandt 4th

General Lori Robinson, Air Force general, was approved on Thursday by the Senate to be the first female officer. She was appointed commander of U.S. Northern Command, which is responsible for preventing attacks against the United States. Robinson was serving as commander of Pacific Air Forces in Hawaii, joining the Air Force in 1982 after graduating college. Coincidentally, the senator to speak up for Robinson at the meeting was female democrat Jeanne Shaheen. At this meeting, the Senate also confirmed General Curtis Scaparrotti to be the top American general in Europe, and Army General Vincent Brooks to lead U.S. forces in Korea.

The appointment of the first female officer in the Armed Forces/Air Force is a huge step. It sends the message that women are equal to men and they are just as strong. While doing synthesis on this article, I thought of two events in history: one was obviously the Women's Rights Movement. Women, such as Susan B. Anthony, fought forever to gain equality and rights. They succeeded, which is part of the reason Robinson was able to even be considered for this position, and it shows that women are still gaining more and more rights little by little. The second was the desegregation of the military. Women have already been in the military for many years now, but this appointment of officer is like a new step in women in the military.

  1. This is so cool to hear! Good for her. It's easy to forget how easy we have it now. The majority of fighting has already been done for us, but it's important to remember that there are still people breaking barriers for us and future generations.
