Fire at New York nuclear power plant By: Nina Bharadwaj, 2nd

An explosion occurred at the Indian Point nuclear power plant about 600 ft away from the reactor building, after a transformer failure. However, no injuries or fatalities occurred, and there was "no threat to public safety at any time." The fire was doused with a sprinkler system , and many different agencies responded to the disaster. Governor, Andrew Cuomo, claims that the incident was minor, yet it was something that needed to be taken seriously. The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, but investigations are taking place.
During the cold war, the Chernobyl Accident (1986) took place due to the flawed reactor design. The night of the accident, two workers died. However, a few weeks later, that number rose to 28 because of radiation poisoning. The plant operators contributed to the explosion by making several, very dire mistakes, and the explosion was an immediate consequence of Cold War alienation. This isolation resulted in less safety. Both of these explosions illustrate how seriously nuclear power plants need to be taken because one wrong move can lead to many deaths.
