What Really Happened on April 12, 2015 by Yasmine B (5th pd)

This article provides a detailed and vivid description on the arrest and later death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore. It also talks about how the riots followed short after and what the local people think about the incident, but throughout the whole article, it talks about how consistent the problem of police brutality is in Baltimore. People who live in the city, especially of African American decent, are terrified of the cops and when one was asked about why they thought Gray ran if he was innocent, he responded with a powerful statement: “People run every day from the police. Why wouldn’t you run when every time you turn, you’re getting harassed? ... Why stop when you already know what they’ll do to you? Rough you up, throw you on the ground?”
The Freddie Gray incident is just another prime example of racism and how government officials are abusing their power. I think the popular perspective at the moment is that police officers are only picking on blacks because they are racist and they don't value the lives of blacks and sadly, the death of Freddie Gray could be used as evidence to support this theory. Stories like these on the news break my heart because it seems like the same story keeps getting reported and no matter how many protests occur no laws or policies are being enforced or changed. Hopefully we will not have to lose another life to make a change that should've been made a long time ago.
