Seattle based coffee chain Starbucks has recently announced that they will cover the entire cost of their employees getting a bachelor's degree online from Arizona State University. For workers with a college degree, the wage premium is expected to increase about eighty four percent. Chief economist at Georgetown University says that "It's the difference between teaching someone to fish and handing someone a fish." A 2011 study shows that people with an advanced degree might earn as much as two million more over their lifetimes. One of the requirements for the program is working at least twenty hours a week, and at least 140,000 employees are currently eligible. So far, 2,000 or so have enrolled. This is a huge step from the failed and superficial workers unions from the Gilded Age. When workers worked for unimaginable pay in awful corrupted conditions, and sweatshops and child labor was legal. Now, Starbucks is leading the way for other companies to invest as workers as people with value.
