OU Racist Chant (Daniel Alcorta 4th)

Although this happened several weeks ago, it is still a current event because it haunts our social media and news. The Oklahoma University racist chant by the fraternity has terrorized our country with a couple of words. The chant, led by two fraternity boys from our very own Highland Park High School and Jesuit Preparatory, consisted of the n word for black people and saying that they will never allow them in their fraternity. The two boys, as well as the entire fraternity, were expelled from the school. The boys and their families are now shunned from the community and harassed by the general public. They have released apology letters and have appeared in court for a trial.

It's a bit degrading and demeaning to say that these boys come from our very home town Dallas, and from schools that we have all heard of and some of our friends have went to. I think that this is a disgusting thing and it leads to the Civil Rights Movement and the KKK. The KKK terrorized people physically and mentally. These boys are a modern representation of them, demeaning others for their different skin pigments. In a way, they have caused much more harm than the KKK ever had with their words. I can't help but feel that Martin Luther King Jr. is very disappointed right now. We have come a long way from where we were in the 50's and 60's. But then instances like these that makes me think that all he did went to waste.

  1. I do not think that the efforts in the civil rights movements were a waste because of the ground that african americans made. there will be racist people forever, and they are not always even going to be white racists; they may be black racists against white people.

  3. Racism is definitely not gone but there is definitely a different attitude towards it. The media has shunned these boys as well as their college and there used to be a time when this was acceptable, change has occurred thanks to the efforts of our leaders in the civil rights movement.
