Obama Agrees to Remove Cuba from the Terror List (Juliana Cortez Pd.3)
On Tuesday it was announced the President Barack Obama agreed to remove Cuba from the government's list of state sponsors of terrorism. This action shows President Obama's attempt to turn the page on the Cold War ear dispute. The decision was made after Obama held and attended an hour long meeting with Raul Castro, the first face-to-face talk in a half-century between a U.S. and Cuban President. Cuba has been on the government's list of state sponsors for over 30 years. If this is
successful, Cuba would again gain the access to the US banking system, which would allow an embassy to be opened and the possibility of trade between the to former Cold War foes. Even if Congress passes a joint resolution that is opposed to the move, Obama could then issue a presidential veto. The White House said that all government departments, including intelligence
agencies, agreed that Cuba should be removed from the list. To many, the decision to remove Cuba from the list states the obvious.
When Mr. Obama announced that he would search for normal ties with Cuba, he began to
express doubt that the nation belonged on the list. It is said that Cuba’s designation has more to do with politics than terrorist activity. US lawmakers have 45 days to oppose the move, during this meeting President Barack Obama and Raul Castro decided that after 50 years of failed U.S. policies, it was time for them to try something new.
