On Saturday, Barack Obama and Raul Castro sat down together for the first time in sixty or more years at a regional summit. They are moving to fix relations that have been broken for a long time. Obama might be seeing this as a chance to tie up his administration with a big diplomatic win. Cuba does not like US legislation and the US does not like Cuba's records with human rights. For the last fifty years, there has been no trade between the countries, even though they are in fairly close proximity. Though there are a lot of differences, Castro has called Obama "an honest man."
These Cuba relations are similar to war reparations made with Germany after World War I. There had to be measures made to deal with the losses of human life and of destruction of property. It was a long time before Germany and the US were able to have any real conversations with Germany. Unfortunately, there are still Holocaust deniers, even in the US and abroad. Hopefully Cuba and the US will able to repair themselves eventually. However, it's been sixty years and I'm not sure it's possible at this point for things to get any better than they are.
