Airport Workers Stealing Luggage By: Nina Bharadwaj, 2nd

At an International Airport in Miami, airport cameras reveal that luggage handlers have been rummaging through passenger's bags and stealing things. Unknown to them, police officials have been investigating into luggage theft for some time. These thefts aren't only occurring in Miami. The JFK International Airport in New York and the LA International airport have been highly ranked as airports with the largest amount of luggage theft. At the JFK airport, hidden cameras (in 2013) revealed airport workers stealing items such as iPhones, camera, jewelry, and cash. In LA, search warrants were executed at 25 locations, when airports were hearing of complaints about thefts. At the Miami International Airport, 31 baggage handlers have been arrested, with six of the arrests occurring this year.
This is a rather shocking event, and it ties into the US Patriot Act which was enacted following the 9/11 attacks. After the attacks, the Patriot Act was passed, allowing the government to have more surveillance in order to protect our national security. Other harsh policies were enforced to ensure our safety, and major areas that had to undergo huge transformations were airports. An individual's luggage had to go through more intense screening procedures, and passengers were also subjected to more thorough screening. It is rather ironic that while airports had to amp up their security for the threat of terrorism, they have still not become completely secure from people who work there.

  2. Honestly, this happens all the time especially internationally. But if this continues then the airlines are going to begin to loose a lot of money because no one's going to want to buy a ticket.
