232,000 people around the Dallas-Fort Worth area are without power. Temperatures are supposed to get into the teens, which means there will be a chilly night ahead for many people. Additionally, icy roads cause problems for everyone. Ice weighs down tree limbs which often fall into the road or onto power lines, which cause these widespread power outages. Fallen trees cause problems frequently in weather situations like these. For example, a man in Arkansas was killed when a tree fell on his camper. Traveling is often hindered by storms like this, and roads become a mix of the sand and salt used to try to melt the ice. Temparatures were fairly warm earlier this week, but now it's the exact opposite. In fact, part of the nation is locked in a deep freeze, with temperatures below zero.
We've all heard about this major winter storm sweeping across the country. We're right in the middle of it. In fact, I'm writing this on my phone, since my house currently has no electricity. We get to miss school, which could be considered a bonus, but we'll probably have to make it up sometime in the spring. But, I'm sure that everyone remembers that major ice storm in 2011 when we got an entire week off from school and didn't have to make it up. Many people without power are taking refuge in hotels. I'm personally not looking forward to the cold temperatures tonight. Hopefully things will warm up soon, but we'll probably need some sunshine for the ice to melt.
