Since Friday, (December 6th), extreme weather has affected nearly all regions of the United States. The harsh weather has led to school closures across the nation, with dangerous road conditions being the primary cause. Unfortunately, at least 12 people have died in traffic accidents during the storm and several others are missing. Temperatures in most regions are expected to stay low, including Dallas, where the expected temperatures will likely be 10-20 degrees below average for this time of year. CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen noted that it is "very unusual" to have such severe weather, given that the official start of winter is still 12 days away. In Dallas, there were approximately 20,000 people without power on monday, as well as 1,700 flights cancelled the same day. However, this number of flight cancellations has decreased from just one day earlier on sunday, when 2,600 were cancelled. The only region in the nation that went unaffected by the weather was Florida, mainly its Gulf Coast, where its high temperature was 87 degrees this weekend. Furthermore, a few regions in the U.S. are expecting more wintery weather later on this week, which will likely cause even more difficulty for cities already trying to recover from the set backs caused by the storm.
From personal experience, I think everyone in Dallas can agree that this storm was one that caused a lot of difficulty. Most people in Texas aren't used to such hazardous weather, and most had little or no idea what to expect from the storm. For the most part, the storm shut down the entire city, with people being very reluctant to venture out onto roads due to the icy conditions, many even deciding not to make the journey to work as a precaution. I enjoyed the icy conditions because I love wintery weather. Though it was nice for a couple of days, it would make everyday life much more difficult if out weather were like this on a regular basis.

It's very strange that the weather is so cold even before winter officially starts! I hope everyone is extra careful if the dangerous road conditions persist. Although I personally enjoyed the weather as well, I agree that daily life would be rather difficult if we had weather like this all the time.
ReplyDeleteThere are some things in life that we cannot control and weather (so far) is one of them along with most of the difficulties and inconveniences that can come with it. But, you bring up a good point, it is certainly a blessing that we live in a place that has a climate that does not present that many hazards to our well being. Also, it is our ability as humans to adapt to a factor such as weather that enables us to prosper more.
