Guns Kill More People Than Cars-Meg Mickelsen

Guns Kill More People Than Car Accidents In 14 US States

It is expected that in 2015 death by firearm will take more lives in the United States than death by car accidents. This is a surprising statistic and is already true in 14 states in 2014.  The numbers were pulled from data gathered by the Center for Disease Control.  One of the shocking realities is suicidal deaths using guns already exceeds deaths by car accidents in 5 states.  Those states are Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Utah. The total number of car accident deaths in 2010 was 32,885.  The total number of gun deaths was 31,672 and the total number of gun suicides was 19,392.  The states where gun deaths by suicide are most prevalent are in sparsely populated states where there would rightly be fewer car accidents.  Unfortunately in more densely populated states of Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Virginia gun deaths are exceeding car accidents.  Many of the states where gun laws are the weakest have the highest rate of gun fatalities.  This gives one reason to pause and reconsider the strength of gun laws and the power of the NRA in the national and local arenas.  What would uniform gun laws and restrictions render in terms of the number of fatalities.  It seems more than coincidental that in states where citizens are allowed to “constitutionally carry” are the states with the highest number of gun fatalities.
