In the aftermath of the Newton massacre, gun control legislation has shifted from the U.S. congress to the States. Obama pushed for universal background checks, banning rapid fire assault weapons, and for putting a limit on the number of bullets a magazine can hold. However, gun rights advocates fiercely opposed this by saying it went against the 2nd amendment, the right to hold and bear arms. Between the shooting in Newtown and the shooting in Aurora, 1,500 bills calling for stricter gun control measures have attempted to pass.
Every event like Aurora and Newtown is heart-breaking. I am a full supporter of universal background checks: I think that in the long run, they will be the most beneficial in keeping guns out of the wrong peoples hands. As a gun-rights advocate, I am hesitant to agree with any of the other measurements that Obama wants to take towards gun-restriction. However, I am unable to understand why both the NRA and Congress can't agree that universal background checks don't infringe on our rights and pass a bill to make it happen. As awful as the shootings in Newtown and Aurora and others similar to them are, if we don't take measurements to at least make sure that everyone purchasing a gun is mentally stable and a law-abiding citizen, nothing is going to get better.
