Ronnie Smith, a chemistry teacher working at an international school in Benghazi, was shot to death on Thursday. This happened a little over a year after the U.S. ambassador and three others were killed by Islamist militants. The White House has issued a statement saying that they expect the Libyan government to investigate the shooting thoroughly. Libya's fragile government has been trying to contain all of the former fighters and militants, but in a separate event on Thursday 3 U.S. soldiers were also killed.
It's terrible that someone who was only trying to help and teach was shot for no apparent reason. I really hope that the Libyan government listens to the U.S. request to thoroughly investigate what happened. With so much U.S. blood spilled on Libyan soil in order to help them rebuild their government, it's only fair that they actually carry out this favor. I hope that both the fallen soldiers and Ronnie Smith rest in peace, and that their killers are found and brought to justice.
