On the 72nd anniversary of the attack that sent the U.S. into World War II, about 50 American survivors, many in their 90's, gathered to commemorate the attack that took about 2,400 of their fellow soldiers lives. The attack wounded 1,178 Americans, sunk or badly damaged a dozen U.S. warships, and destroyed 323 aircrafts. It's believed that about 2,000 to 2,500 Pearl Harbor survivors are still alive, a chief interpretor for the USS Arizona memorial says that we need to make sure to honor them while they are still here with us.
To hear about all of these men who have gone back, year after year, to honor those who fell in that battle was beautiful. It's sad to think that the number of survivors gets smaller every year, but amazing to think that their experiences and their stories will be passed down through their children and grandchildren. The effects of this attack extended far beyond the loss of life at Pearl Harbor: it catapulted us into the second World War. We honor and respect those who fought and those who died to protect us and keep us safe. I hope that one day I could at least see the memorial at Pearl Harbor.
