Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid icon and South Africa's first black president, died on Friday, December 5th at the age of 95. From the 1940s on, Mr. Mandela worked towards the rights of black South Africans in the apartheid ruled nation. He was arrested more than once, and was even held in prison for 27 years before being released in 1990. Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, and became president of South Africa in 1994 at the age of 76. He worked hard at creating peace reconciliation between blacks and whites in his country. He stepped down from presidency in 1999 and had rarely been seen in public since officially retiring in 2004.He was a great man, he gave up many years of his life in order to work for equal rights for his people. He helped end an unjust hierarchy that was racist and gave the power to the minority. He was a courageous and wonderful man, and will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace Nelson Mandela.
