Summary:
New Jersey's highest court argued whether to allow gay marriage in the state. This caused a battle based on whether the civil union law can protect these rights. Governor Chris Christie with the New Jersey Supreme Court agreed to consider the argument in January.
In 2006, the New Jersey Supreme Court stated that gay couples have equal rights as heterosexual couples, but these rules were unclear once they were given up to the legislature to take care of. Last year, Christie vetoed the bill of allowing gay marriage, but the legislature has until the end of the year to override his veto. Meanwhile, gay rights groups are trying their best to collect enough votes.
Analysis:
I think it is good that the state is considering passing this law allowing gay marriage. I personally don't understand why it is such a difficult problem to consider this, because America is a free country and shouldn't people get to marry who they want no matter what gender? It shouldn't matter what type of couple you are in order to be treated fairly, especially since the Supreme Court has stated before that gay couples have the same rights as any other couple. As a lawyer said in the article, "Every day that goes by is a day that people are further damaged, sometimes permanently, because they don't have access to basic fairness under the law". If this unfairness continues, it could create even more problems that are more difficult than acknowledging people's individual rights, such as this.

I understand both ends of the spectrum . However the definition of marriage is portrayed to be between two people of the opposite sex,so is this really marriage ?
ReplyDeleteI also understand both sides. Personally, I favor the idea of gay marriage but I can definitely see where the argument comes from.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that marriage is between two people of opposite genders is a belief claimed to be based on the bible that politicians have been using in their platform to defend their prejudice. Marriage is the legal and spiritual union of two people because of love
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely correct.
DeleteFelicia Padilla- I choose to believe that marriage is marriage and love is love. If a man loves another man I see it as being the same love as a man would have for a woman. However, I can understand why some people would be opposed to this disregarding any religious reasons. It starts to be a matter of where do we draw the line, is the love between a 13 year old and a 50 year old also love? And therefore should pedofiles not be classified as so Shermark
ReplyDeleteI very much understand where both sides are coming from. It's just that one of them is composed of extreme bias and personal agenda, while one is meant to rightly equalize the freedoms and liberties of American citizens.
ReplyDeleteA sort of update on this article: According to CNN, the state is supposed to start allowing same-sex marriage this Monday. However, the creation of any laws allowing it will probably be delayed.
ReplyDeleteFelicia made a good point saying that love issues is not just between genders but also ages and that those people will eventually cause a movement of their own. But gay marriage is more common than marriage of those who's ages are far apart so I don;t think that would be a valid point to make in an argument
