An American Shutdown Reaches the Earth's End (Melissa Kurtzman, 5th Period)

Summary: This article talks about how hundreds of research scientists won't be able to go back to Antarctica this year because they've lost federal funding due to the government shutdown. Scientists have said that even if a budget deal is reached, many scientists will have lost weeks of valuable research time and possibly won't be able to finish experiments from the year before. Foreign researchers are also being affected by this shutdown because many of them depend on transportation and logistic systems developed by the United States. Graduate students are depending on collections of snow and ice from Antarctica for their final theses and if they're professors can't make the trip, they will have a big problem.

Analysis: It is so unfortunate that so many researchers are scrambling to find other ways of getting to Antarctica. I didn't know that so many of these programs were funded by the government and I feel really bad for everyone who isn't able to do their work. At this point, Congress is just going back and forth about the federal budget without getting anything done. I hope that they can work everything out soon so these people can get back to their research projects as soon as possible.
