2 arrested in bullying death: Joan Milburn pd. 1
12 year old Rebecca Sedwick jumped to her death September 9 after intense bullying. Apparently there was a dispute between her and another girl who dated the same boy. It unfortunately didn't end with her death. The rude comments continued after her death. The comments made led to an arrest of a 12 year old(who was released to her parents)and a 14 year old who remains detained. It was proved that Rebecca was not only verbally harassed but she was also physically attacked at least once.
Response
This story is really upsetting to me. It hurts me to think that some action of a child could actually lead to another child's death. Being a victim of bullying myself in elementary school I absolutely identify with some of the feelings Rebecca was feeling. I hope that her abusers get put to justice.

It's extremely tragic when bullying lead to the death of someone. It is especially shocking that they were so young. 12 is very young to be th cause of someone's suicide through bullying.
ReplyDeleteFelicia Padilla 5th period- wow! This is really upsetting. When I was 12 years old I didn't even know what suicide was let alone have thoughts about actually committing it. This just goes to show how children's lives have changed in less than 10 years.
ReplyDeleteSchools should really work on improving the attention that is put into these cases. Its sad to see that many claim to have zero tolerance yet let these events go unresolved until you get tragic consequences like what we have here. There needs to be a change in order to avoid further deaths like this than can easily be avoided.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad to hear, especially considering how young the girl was. Bullying is such a horrific problem in today's society, not only with kids, but everyone. People of all ages need to watch how they treat others because their scarring actions always have the possibility of leading to the worst.

ReplyDeleteI typically dislike when kids are detained for a non-direct incident, but bullying has gotten so out of hand lately. That girl didn't even feel remorse after Sedwick killed herself. She posted a status admitting that she bullied Sedwick, and that she didn't care that she committed suicide. I think putting them in jail may serve as a wake up call to not only the two girls, but also other people who hear this story. Or so I hope it will. -Nana Johnson p2
This is so sad. I believe that social and emotional health is the overlying issue here, not bullying. It's a fact of life that people are hurtful and times are hard so if adults focused more on holistic mental health for teens, this and many other different cases of suicide and self harm could be avoided. I don't believe in being "bullied to death" but I do believ in major neglect of children's mental health.
