Steve King, an Iowa congressman, has been denounced from the judiciary and agricultural committee after stating in a New York Times interview, "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization -- how did that language become offensive?". King has a history of making racist remarks and spitting insults about immigrants, but no action has been taken by the republican leaders until recently. After being kicked off his committees, King made a statement saying that his words were misunderstood, and that the truth is being ignored. The Republican Party has been a lot more weary about their image after losing 40 house seats during the most recent election. Though Steven King is being denounced, the President's similar, hateful speech has still not been condemned. The Republicans are continuing the embrace Trump's stance on immigration and racist remarks, but are making changes to save their image.
Its upsetting to see that racism and ignorance has existed in our government for so long without being called out. Despite Steven King being censured, its motives makes the denouncement almost worthless. The hypocrisy from the Republican Party is disappointing, and I hope that more racists are denounced in the future. Many evil people in government have been able to make it far through government without being held accountable for their actions, like Joseph McCarthy's lead of the communist witch hunt, which caused many people to lose their jobs before he was called out for his wrongdoings.
