Ariana Oliver- NY Fight Legislation of Marijuana

https://www.studentnewsdaily.com/daily-news-article/new-york-state-officials-fighting-legalization-of-marijuana/

This article was posted today, on January 14, 2018 by Carl Campanile, NY Post. The organization that represents the NY public health agency opposed both Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio efforts to legalize marijuana. The NY State Association of County Health Officials claims that weed may not be as safe as people think. They're worried that this would effect the health of many newborns, infants and the youth overall. This came about because the intoxicant in marijuana remains in the birth giver's breast milk. Also, pot is a gateway drug.
NY is the most aggressive anti-smoking states in the US, establishing the Clean Indoor Air Act and spending millions on tobacco settlement revenue. Legalizing marijuana will ruin the consistency of the technical and spiritual aspect of the act.
I believe the positive aspects outweigh the negative aspects because many of the concerns are opinionated and based on what could be instead of being backed up by some facts to establish credibility. The government during the gilded age was trying to combat drug addiction because large amounts of labor immigrants from all over the world would come to the US hoping for a better life. However, working long hours in the day causes stress, so without benefits or safety concerns, large amount of immigrants became addicted to drugs. This is where the drug opium increased drastically and caused the government to feel strongly against the drug. This directly led the the Opium Exclusion Act of 1909.
