Lily Philips- Partial Government Shut Down Worries Parents and Children

The somewhat recent partial government shutdown has workers struggling to make ends meet. Without a paycheck for four weeks now, people are having trouble paying their bills, college tuition, and even food. Children have been taking notice of this sudden change in parents’ behavior, and they have joined alongside them with worrying and stress. A young girl in Virginia is concerned her parents will not be able to pay for her braces, and another child has been making sugar scrub and selling them on Etsy for extra money. Schools in Washington offer free meals for children without the means to buy food. Trump not only thinks we have problems along the border that are worth shutting down the government for, but we now have problems in our own country where parents are not able to provide basic necessities for their families because they are not recieving their paychecks.

This article was published by The New York Times and written by Dan Levin who focuses on America’s youth. The author of this work seemed to stick to the facts rather than adding his own opinion, and he used real examples of children to further his point of distress in American families. The audience of this article is the people of America, and the author wanted to inform everyone of the recent matters of our country. We should be aware of the current events not only in our country but in the world whether they are good or bad. This can be connected to the Gilded Age in U.S. during 1870s because America is known as a country of opportunity and freedom, yet we are facing issues the President desperately needs to address. We still do not know how long the government will be shut down, so these government workers will have to live without a paycheck for weeks, months, or possible even longer.
