Germany and Facebook team up to counter fake accounts and false information ahead of the European Union elections in May. Facebook has worked previously with German officials when, in 2017, they took down many fake accounts. New rules will be implemented for campaigns that want to buy ads both in this years EU elections as well as elections in India. Similar to the vetting used in the US, the new initiative will include requiring advertisers to verify their identity hoping that with these measures, they will be able to tackle fake accounts and provide a interference-free election.
In 2016, the US experienced interference in the presidential election at the hand of the Russian government. Hopefully, by the presidential election in 2020, Facebook will have perfected their crackdown on false information and if they prove to be successful in the EU elections, maybe Facebook will spread their attack on election interference internationally to provide a more transparent election process.
