Camille Cole - So Many Things On Strike

Camille Cole - So Many Things On Strike

Summary: Teachers in Los Angeles, California, the second largest school district in the entire nation, have all gone on strike. About 32,000 educators walked out of their jobs and have refused to work again until their schools are properly funded. They aren’t on strike for higher pay, they are on strike for smaller class sizes so that their students can have more individualized teaching, as they deserve. This would mean the Los Angeles ISD would need to hire on more teachers to meet this demand. Over 600,000 students are now left without teachers, waiting to go back to school.

Analysis: Teacher strikes have always confused me a little bit. I understand their point and that they truly are driven to get something accomplished here to save their students, but at what cost? These kids now are not having classes. They don’t have the ability to learn right now because the teachers are out protesting. I have to say, this is a very worth cause that, if won, will far outweigh the cost. With classes that are up to 50 students in size, there is no way for one teacher to be able to make sure that every student in that room is able to learn the proper amount.
