Anna Speer - Los Angeles Teachers go on strike

Nearly 32,000 educators in Los Angeles walked out on the job today.  This is the second largest school district in the country with nearly 600,000 students.  This came after weeks of negotiation went nowhere. While obviously teacher pay is not what it should be, that is not the primary reason for this strike.  The teachers union wants them to hire more staff; including librarians, nurses and social workers.  Many teachers currently have up 50 students in their class; an unacceptable level by any standard. The school district would also love to have smaller classes but does not have funding to do so.  Is LA the first of many large cities that will face this crisis?

  1. 50 students in one class is CRAZY! It must be hard to teach in that environment with there being so many kids.. and it must only be hard to learn, because there is nearly no way to get "one on one" time with an educator.

  2. The number of students per class in Los Angeles is definitely not acceptable and not a good learning environment for the students. This makes me appreciate the learning environment that I have and I hope that the strike will result in changes for the Los Angeles schools.
