The United States is making provisions to take in international refugees stranded from Southeast Asia, called "boat people." A spokesperson for the US has said that it is ready to take the lead in a multi-country effort at this time organized by the United Nations in order to find new homes for many refugees in dire need of somewhere to go. Even in the past three weeks, three thousand of these boat people- Rohingya Muslims- have fleed their home in Myanmar trying to escape poverty. What they ended up doing was being stuck in overcrowded boats in Southeast Asia. Developed countries have been trying to send aid to them. Countries nearby such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand have been reluctant to have anything to do with these refugees. They wouldn't know what to do with them and they don't have the resources to deal with them all. This Wednesday, they changed their mind a little bit and have let a few thousand people into their countries.
The United States has a long history of becoming too involved with countries whose problems don't have necessarily anything to do with the welfare of the US. An example of this would be the war in Afghanistan which we only recently completely pulled all troops out of. The United Nations has really been a cover for the United States to send in a bunch of troops with only a few from other countries who enter in order to get the benefits. Throughout history, since the Monroe doctrine, the US has taken on this role of global police officer. It is a hard job but when it's helping thousands of refugees, it's hard to see how this can be a bad time. The United States can get overly involved, but the intentions seem to be pure.
