Thursday night, there was a protest in Olympia, Washington, of a white police officer's shooting of two unarmed men, who were African American, who had been accused of shoplifting. The men survived the shooting. Wary of other recent cases, an outside force was brought in to investigate. The protest was about 400 people at a local park in "Black Lives Matter" shirts. The two men who were shot were stepbrothers. Police officers in the area have said that they understand how sensitive this area is right now, especially considering other recent occurrences of white policemen shooting unarmed black men.
This is the way to do a protest. Small, tasteful, peaceful. Speaking their mind and still being covered in a major news article. This is the perfect example of exercising first amendment rights. I think it is very fortunate that the people involved in this case are all still alive and may testify for themselves. I personally have no idea who is the victim in this case, but the outcome leaves a lot of room for the justice system to work its way out and resolve itself. Thinking about other events such as what recently is happening in Ferguson, Missouri, it is not a stretch to assume that this case, too probably had something to do with race. This is unfortunately the world in which we live that we are able to make assumptions like this.
