US and Cuba try to repair relationship by Elizabeth Walker, p.3

In the past couple months, there has been a lot of hope about the United States and Cuba restoring peaceful diplomatic ties. On Thursday, the two countries tried to reach an accord on these issues. There is a checklist that they have to make it through before they are able to create full fledged embassies again between these countries. On Thursday, it did not work out. But they have agreed to try again today. Representatives from both countries have declined to speak to the media but said that might make a statement this afternoon. There is a lot for the countries to work through. They still disagree on much of public policy and the United States has problems with Cuba's infringement on human rights.

This is a great step in the right direction. I love to see these countries working together. This is as when Nixon and Khrushev began to have this weird friendship even though their countries were at odds with eachother as far as their political leanings go. It is unrealistic to expect an end to this feud which has lasted decades in a couple days. If they are serious, it's going to take specific plans and many peace talks. It is a good goal for them to establish embassies between the countries again as a place to start. I think this is a good step on the way of achieving a worldwide peace, although who knows how successful or accurate these rumors are about what is actually going on between the United States and Cuba.
