Open hiring at Yonkers Bakery/ Madeline Boreham 4th period

Greystone Bakery in Yonkers, New York, is well known for its open hiring policy. This means that regardless of their immigration status criminal background, or even no work experience they can still be hired.  The bakery's founder, Bernie Glassman, runs the bakery on a social-justice business model that started back in 1982. The bakery is financially successful acting as a supplier of brownies in Ben and Jerry's ice-cream as well as a seller at Whole Foods.. He considers everyone who walks through the door to have the same chance at getting hired.  He states that he does not matter what a person has done, but only how they work in their job. Glassman has received praise for his structure at events like TedTalk.
This is a whole new way of working Glassman out of the goodness of his heart puts his faith in people where they might have not been giving the opportunity to show what they can do. Some people would hire illegal immigrants because they would be cheap labor, but Glassman pays them in full.  He is displaying true kindness and it is a wonderful way to give people another chance.  He is also cautious of who he hires because in the world today people will take advantage of this system, so  he does have a good grasp on who to hire.  It would be interesting to see what would happen to the unemployment rate if me businesses open up to the social-justice business model.
