At the Summit of the America's this past week, Obama has begun talks with Raul Castro of Cuba. He has earned many fans because of this. This action is one of the least controversial stands that he's taken in his eight years so far, and many are praising him because of it. For the first time in a loooong time, Latin America is actually a fan of the United States. It's hard to remember a time when a foreign nation actually liked us. However, this does not mean immediate reconciliation. The United States still has major problems with the way that Cuba has dealt with human rights in the past, and Cuba has also found fault with the United States and some of their policies. The handshake of these two diplomatic leaders ends a silence and an iciness that has lasted since the Cold War. ''
Cuba has not been taken off the terrorism list, President Obama reassures. However, this is a step for America as a whole in its relationship with Latin America. In fact, this is a connection that had been broken long before the Cold War, although that certainly did help. Woodrow Wilson did a pretty good job of butchering that in his time. He sent in armies of brutality when it was not needed, and yet is heralded for his later foreign policy. Many will not remember how racist he was, or how many dies unnecessarily by his hand, especially in Latin America. No wonder they have had such a bad relationship with the United States in the past. Who knows what people will remember about Obama in say, ten years. History is easily rewritten. But what I can tell is he's currently trying to patch up his foreign policy so that the cards are stacked mostly in his favor for a great legacy.
