On March 26, Indiana
Governor Mike Pence signs the state's Religious Freedom Restoration Act
into law. The new law causes an immediate backlash and boycott by those who
feel it can be used to discriminate against Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender
(LGBT) individuals. Mayors in cities such as Seattle
and San Francisco ban all official travel to
Indiana. Businesses like Sales force and Angie's List stop plans to expand
within the state. Some Indiana business owners put signs in their windows that
read "We Serve Everyone." The hashtag #BoycottIndiana also trended on
twitter across the nation. On March 31,
The Arkansas Senate passes a similar Religious
Freedom Restoration Act, also known as the Conscience Protection Act. Major
businesses such as Apple, Acxiom, and Walmart publicly oppose the law. Doug
McMillon, Walmart's CEO, urges Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson to veto the
bill.
I can’t believe that
this is happening today. I am appalled to call Arkansas my home state now. Not
only is this discriminating to the LGBT community, but it also means that we
are going back in time rather than moving forward for and with equality. To
think of how many people have died for us to get this far with equality and
some idiotic politicians are dragging us back in time. We have so much further
to go to be completely equal and I honestly think that it won’t happen within
the next 25 years, which really shows how corrupt or society is today.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/04/01/indiana-religious-freedom_n_6984156.html
I had no idea support for the cause was so widespread! This is a very similar incident to the protests during the 60's by the counterculture at the time to champion the same thing.
ReplyDeleteThis is really a corrupt law, however i do not know that we can be surprised that a primarily republican state has passed such a discriminatory law when it is very clear they care only for the WASPs that live in their state.
ReplyDeleteThis is very similar to the counterculture in the 60s, this law is very degrading.
