Leslie Kelly: Boy says he was suspended for bringing a purse to school
Oh, honey, I'm so sorry you live in Kansas :( . 13-year-old Skylar has recently been suspended for school for refusing to forsake his lovely Vera Bradley purse. He was actually pulled out of school. On the grounds that he has a penis and people with penises don't like Vera Bradley. I mean, I know it's Kansas, but come on! You're going to pluck the kid out of school because he likes to carry around a purse and that doesn't fit neatly enough into your little gender identity box? Give me a break. As a society, we are slowly but surely moving toward a much healthier view on the concept of gender--you can express it how you want, it's full of grey areas, and clothes and accessories don't necessarily need to be associated with a certain gender. According to Skylar, he doesn't see why he can't have the right to wear the purse or express himself. I don't either.

It's really sad that people won't just let others be who they want to be. He wasn't hurting anyone by wearing that purse so why was such a huge deal made out of it? I feel so sorry for that boy :(

DeleteI do too. Stuff like this is ridiculous
ReplyDeleteHe has every right to carry a purse if he wants to. It's so ridiculous that the school made such a big deal about this. I could understand it if he had been carrying something illegal or dangerous in it, but that wasn't the case at all.
ReplyDeleteThis sort of oppression is ludicrous. That child had every right to accessorize the way he pleased. However, for curiosities sake, was this a public or private school?
