Man dies trying to save puppies - Hannah Selby 4th

Information:
On Saturday afternoon in Delaware, a man's house caught on fire and he died while trying to save his 8 pit bulls (which were mostly puppies).  The man - Nate Lewandowski - was 36 years of age and lived alone with his puppies.  A neighbor reported to the news that he had seen the house burning, then saw Lewandowski escape, only to go back in to try to save the dogs that were trapped in the flames.  He never did come back out, due to a sudden explosion from the fire that killed him.  Only the mother of the puppies was able to emerge from the fire alive, and it was reported that she tried to re-enter the building to save her master, but was stopped by a nearby observer.  The dog is currently being cared for by a friendly neighbor.

Response:
I don't seem to understand why there were all these people watching but nobody did anything to help, and why the fire department was seemingly absent from this event (well, at least not until it was too late); but other than that, this story is really bittersweet: it's so horrible that he and his puppies had to die so young in such a terrible event, but it's also really touching that he loved his dogs enough to risk his life to save them, and that the mother dog wanted to do the same.

  1. I agree with you and don't understand why the people watching didn't help. I am also disappointed in the fire department but then again I can't judge them. All I can say is that they have failed to do their job.

  2. Felicia Padilla 5th period- this is so heartwarming. Even though it has a horrible outcome, the events are still sweet . You always hear stories about animals being abused, it is nice to hear about animals that were truly cared about.

  3. Civilians aren't really supposed to enter burning buildings, even if that would be the "right" or heroic thing to do. If they got stuck, then they would just cause more problems for firefighters and could get themselves hurt. Additionally, there's always a chance that that there could be an explosion, even if the fire itself doesn't seem that bad. That was the case in this situation: if someone went in after him, they probably would have died as well because of the explosion.

  4. That makes sense, but did anyone even call the fire department? They aren't even mentioned.
