The Obama Administration’s overtures to Iran are straining
the US-Israeli alliance more than anything in recent history. This is compounding public concern over
the ongoing Middle East security crisis, and whether or not the White House can
manage it. Washington is
advocating an easing of sanctions against Iran for six months, in exchange for
Tehran’s capping parts of its nuclear program. While playing down the potential rift, the State Department
admitted that it was considering sending Secretary of State John Kerry back to
Jerusalem for the second time this month in an attempt to repair the breach
with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. The Obama Administration denies any
lessening of its commitment to Israel.
This article reiterates the ongoing, deepening rift that is
developing between the Obama administration and Israel. And as usual, denial is the name of the
game with the current White House.
The US initially demanded a complete disbanding of Iran’s nuclear
program, before economic sanctions would be lifted. Israeli PM Netanyahu has repeatedly
demanded the complete disarmament of Iran’s nuclear arsenal, as their
leadership has repeated threatened to strike Israel with a nuclear
warhead. The US initially
proposed that Iran completely dissolve this ability and thus remove the
threat. Obama has once again
proven his misplaced allegiance to the Arab world, in complete disregard for
the long-standing, crucial alliance between the US and Israel.
