Leslie Kelly: Spanish pianist could face jail for practicing
We've all had super annoying neighbors, I'm sure (elephant people being most dreaded to the apartment-dweller). However, this case seems to be incredibly exaggerated--a Spanish woman is dragging a her neighbor, a concert pianist, to court on the grounds that she has caused continual noise pollution and psychological damage. Because said pianist sometimes practiced at home on the weekends. Rather quietly. She even had her place soundproofed twice. And yet her neighbor has still taken the case to court. The pianist is facing the possibility of spending up to seven and a half years in prison for playing her piano in her own home. I realize that every one has the right to be protected against noise pollution but...I just don't think this was noise pollution. And I certainly don't see how the neighbor could have gotten psychological injuries because of it.

Some people are so petty! It takes time away from the real issues in the world today.
ReplyDeleteByron Otis- I have to wonder about the previous dialogue between the pianist and neighbor. Could there have been something more? It doesn't seem like such a situation would create a need for court, especially after the pianist has gone to such lengths to make sure the neighbor is happy.
ReplyDeleteI am curious as to what the neighbor cites as "continual" noise pollution. The case shouldn't stand in court unless there is substantial evidence that the pianist was practicing at unusual hours every day of every week. Musician problems.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Byron, I feel like there should be more to the story. Because if there isn't, then this is ridiculous! Part of living in an apartment is being surrounded by other people. It was nice of the pianist to even go to the trouble of trying to sound proof her room. As a musician, I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to be told I couldn't practice for my job. Also: why is there such a harsh sentence for this crime? Seven years seems a ridiculous amount.

I agree with Byron and Ashely that there had to be more to this. And why would you need your place soundproofed twice? It sounds like she should have checked on the company she hired and token them to court.
