This
article, written by James Dean, showcases NASA’s new spacecraft Maven, which
will begin its ten-month journey to Mars on Monday, November 18, 2013. It will
then orbit Mars for at least 1 Earth year. Maven’s goal is to figure out what
changed on Mars to cause the water and microbial life we believe was once there
to disappear. Scientists have said that water and greenhouses gases were once
prevalent on the planet and could have gone into the crust or escaped into
space. Maven will focus on the latter theory. Scientists have said that Maven could
help us figure out the parameters for life on other planets. The mission may be
extended after the initial year.
It’s
so exciting to see the advancements in space technology! I can’t believe how
far we’ve come since first going into space. The Maven mission will allow us to
learn so much about the other life forms that may have inhabited our solar
system in the past. By understanding the history of life in our solar system,
we will be able to understand more about the solar systems and galaxies further
away. I’m greatly looking forward to seeing what the future will bring as far
as space goes.
