Motivational Speaker at Richardson High School Criticized for Gender Stereotyping

Yesterday, Richardson High School students were treated to an assembly led by author Justin Lookadoo (yep, that's his name). He was promoting his book Dateble: Are You? Are They? and was supposedly teaching 'how to become dateable'. However, most parents were rightfully disturbed with his views. On his website rudateable.com he has a set of rules for both girls and guys, and they hold outdated, misogynistic ideas such as "Dateable girls know how to shut up" and "Dateable girls know that guys need to be needed." If everyone followed his stereotypes, all guys would be 'Godly, dangerous, and wild' while all females would be 'soft, gentle, and girly.'

Personally, as a feminist, this pisses me off on so many levels. I could honestly go on and on about this, but I'll keep this brief. Firstly, the website has a set of rules for both guys and girls, and both contain outdated concepts of how both genders should act. Men have to be daring warriors that conquer lands and women have to be good, quiet doormats to their counterpart's needs. It literally says on the website "Dateable girls know how to shut up" (see it here) and it completely leaves out all gay and trans people. Furthermore, a little more research into his books show an absolute, misogynistic view that promotes rape culture and enforces negative stereotypes. To quote: "If you go too tight, to short, or too low-cut [in your clothing choices], you are no longer a person to get to know but an object to use."Enough said right there.
Basically: I'm pretty angry. Totally hate this dude.

  1. What this guy is saying is so wrong. It's hard to believe that he actually was allowed to speak at a school. The fact that people can still hold such incorrect ideas in our society is astonishing.

  2. This man is a fool who fails to progress with society. His opinions are the kind that keep both genders in a box and promote misguided cultural values and stereotypes.

  3. I heard about this! The fact that he is so oblivious to the changing roles in society is astounding. I, for one, would not want a man that follows his so called "rules." They are chauvinistic and insensitive.

First off, why was this guy at school to speak about how to "dateable"? Anyway, honestly, I don't think he intentionally meant to cause anyone, female or male, to become offended. I just think he was promoting his book, exactly what the school paid him to do. Because it is such a controversial...and rather peculiar topic, Richardson HS administrators should have considered the opposing views of the students and, more importantly their parents.
