Remains found in desert are California couple missing since 2010, police say - Alix Kast

Four sets of human remains were found Monday near Victorville, California, in the desert. Two bodies were identified through dental records as Joseph and Summer McStay. The other two bodies are thought to be their sons. Their family disappeared three years ago. They are believed to have been killed, but the police did not disclose how they died. There are no released suspects as of yet. A motorcyclist told the police they had found what might have been human remains, and when police investigated, they discovered two shallow graves with two bodies in each grave. Around the time when the family first disappeared, police investigated their house and found it left as if the family had just intended to go out for a little while. Bowls of popcorn were left in the living room, eggs were left out in the kitchen, and their pets were inside of the house without food or water. They lived in Fallbrook, California. The family's car was found four days after they disappeared, near the U.S.-Mexico border. A surveillance camera captured footage of a family fitting their description walking into Mexico. Someone had researched travel to Mexico on their computer around a week before they left. But the trail ends there. Police will be working with the FBI to try to solve the case.

I believe that the family must have decided to take a short trip to Mexico, such as a day trip. According to that camera footage, it seems like they made it to their destination. But what happened after that is what's really important, for that could determine who the killer could be. It's possible that they were killed in Mexico, and that their bodies were moved to the desert. Victorville is 157 miles from the border, and the family couldn't have walked all that way. Maybe someone who had a grudge against the family followed them to murder them, or they angered someone dangerous. We'll have to wait and see what the police discover to know the truth.
