Last night was the American Music Awards, hosted by Pitbull in Miami. Macklemore won his first AMA for best rap/ hip hop album, but him and Ryan Lewis took the time to make a statement in their acceptance speech. "Due to the fact that we are in Florida tonight accepting this award I want to acknowledge Trayvon Martin and the hundreds and hundreds of kids each year that are dying due to racial profiling and the violence that follows it," he said. "This is really happening. These are our friends, our neighbors, our peers and our fans, and it's time that we look out for the youth and fight against racism and the laws that protect it." He wanted to show people that we can't go on with racial violence or bullying.
I honestly think this is so awesome. Macklemore is a super successful rapper who could've thanked his label or his fans, but chose to make notice of a problem in america. So many celebrities could use their fame to help Americans better our society. He is just one who is brave enough to speak out on something our society isn't brave enough to say. I hope people realize that racial violence is incredibly wrong and hurtful for both victims and antagonist's reputations. We live in 2013, everyone is equal now. We can't pretend to be the more superior race over someone else because in the end we're all Americans. Props to Macklemore for setting us straight.

ReplyDeleteThat is truly awesome! Rather than making a typical acceptance, Macklemore chose to be outspoken on a major political issue. The slaying of Trayvon Martin, the late police response, the protests and the verdict all rocked the nation. I commend the rapper for speaking against racial profiling and encouraging the people to join him in his efforts.
This is incredible! I am so glad he's doing things like this. I completely agree that many more celebrities could be using their fame to attract attention to the more serious issues facing us.
