Summary:
This Veteran's Day, places from across the nation held ceremonies and parades to honor those who have served our country over all of these years. The biggest ceremony being President Obama marking the day at the Arlington National Cemetery. He noted the veterans' duties and sacrifices for our country, and especially honored 107 year old Richard Overton. Overton is known to be the nation's oldest surviving veteran, who attended the ceremony and was applauded for his service by the huge audience. Ceremonies also took place in New York (where a parade was held with 20,000 marchers), Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, California, and New Hampshire.
Analysis:
I think it is amazing that people of our country all come together to honor others who have served in the wars. These ceremonies and parades create such a feeling of unity among us American citizens. It makes us realize that we are all living in the same place, although our lifestyles may be completely different, and people of our country are fighting for our rights and peace. Just like Obama said in the article, "On this hillside of solemn remembrance...we join as one people to honor the debt we can never fully repay." Personally, I can relate to this really well, having many old family members who served in World War 2, and a brother-in-law who just recently finished his term in Afghanistan as a Navy Seal. Having someone close to you who risks their lives for all of us makes you realize what great heroes these fighters are and how important Veteran's Day is.
