Police departments across the country have been gravitating towards a ban against officer tattoos. The reasoning is that the tattoos present the force as unprofessional. For some heritages though, the ban presents more than just an annoyance. In Hawaii, tattoos are not just a method of self-expression. Tattoos communicate heritage, family, culture.
In general, I do not believe tattoos should be a problem for police departments. I can see how some tattoos could present difficulties for officers, but especially in Hawaii's case, many tattoos are harmless. People get tattoos to commemorate things, to provide permanence to situations and people, to communicate beliefs and display what is important to them. This should not be an issue.
