Mom: Newtown victim shouted for classmates to run - Camille Vigil

New details on the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting have been released this week upon its investigation that gathered witness information from surviving students. According to these accounts, one of the children killed in the shooting, six-year-old Jesse Lewis, had encouraged and yelled for students to run while the shooter, Adam Lanza, reloaded his semi-automatic rifle. Just before Lewis told students to run, he had witnessed his teacher get shot by Lanza, which then compelled him to help his fellow students escape. After yelling for the student to run, Lanza shot Lewis in the head, killing him. When Jesse's mother, Scarlett Lewis, got word of her son's heroism, she was "not surprised" and is "so incredibly proud of him."

This new finding about the Newtown shooting only makes it more saddening for me. It just shows how pure the hearts of these children were and how tragic the deaths in this shooting were. Then again, however, it also shows that though there are awful people in this world, there are also really great people like this young boy. It is truly a shame that Jesse Lewis was killed while doing something so selfless as saving his classmates.

  1. If I was the mother of this young boy this would make me feel closure and better about the situation. I would be glad to know that my son was saving other kids lives, but it is still very heartbreaking that he died as did so many other children.

  2. This story is so tragic. You really feel a deeper connection with something if you hear about one person, and looking at this one child's death makes it all the more painful to hear. But he must be remembered, because even at such a young age, he knew that sacrifice is sometimes necessary.
