Jordan Gillette- Republican Tarrant County Official Shahid Shafi recovers from vote to oust him on behalf of his religion

Summary: On January 11th, 2019, Republican Tarrant county official Shahid Shafi managed to recover from a vote to oust him due to his belief in Islam. Those who voted for his removal backed it up by claiming that Shafi loved Islam more than America, and they were unclear about where his loyalties truly lied. The Republican Party Chairman of Tarrant County, Darlin Eason, who was the one to appoint Shafi to his position was disgusted that a vote like this was even happening. Members of the Republican Party from all over Texas Ted Cruz, Greg Abbott and are reaching out to show their support for Shahid Shafi and demeaning the vote to oust him, though others are not. When the decision was made to keep Shafi, Republican Dale Attebery tossed his badge at the stage and resigned, along with many others disapproving of the decision to keep the hardworking Republican County Official.

Analysis: Really? I'm very disappointed, but unfortunately I'm not surprised. Unnecessary bigotry towards Muslims has been lingering in the United States for a lot longer than it should be -which it shouldn't have been there in the first place- and this is just another example of how that can be toxic and helping us take a step backwards in society. Before reading this article I hadn't heard about this at all, even though I live very close to Tarrant. This article was written by the writing team at BBC (the names weren't listed) and this article was written as a way to express that there are good and bad people in both major American political parties, and the toxic effect that bigotry can have on the government. Tarrant County's vote to oust Shahid Shafi can be related to southern African American government officials being voted out of office during the end of the Reconstruction Era.
